If you love the 2018 Ford Mustang GT, then you will definitely be bewildered by the new 2018 Shelby Mustang Super Snake. The new monster comes with a remarkable amount of firepower compared to the standard Mustang GT it is based on even though it uses the same engine. Read along to learn more about the extraordinary job Shelby has done with the 2018 Shelby Mustang Super Snake.
2018 Shelby Mustang Super Snake Exterior and interior
Although the Super Snake is mostly about mechanical upgrades, Shelby throws in some visual upgrades to set the model apart from mundane Mustangs and to ensure people recognize the “serpent” from afar. To this end, the 2018 model has a new front fascia, a new hood, grille, front splitter, rockers, tinted windows, and a bolt-on spoiler. Unlike the standard Mustangs, the venom-spitting monster rides on 20-inch forged aluminum wheels that come in two styles. For extra cash, one gets a wide body package that features more stripes.
The wide body package adds 10 cm (4 inches) to the rear making the Super Snake look seriously menacing. Inside, Shelby has also done some changes to set the Mustang Super Snake apart from regular Mustangs. It features unique Shelby Super Snake badges on the dash, unique floor mats with Super Snake badges, attractive contrast stitching as well as new door plates.
Engine and performance
The Super Snake is powered by the Same 5.0 L, V-8 mill that powers the Mustang GT. To squeeze more power out of the mill, Shelby has slapped a supercharger on the engine hiking power output to 710 hp for the base Super Snake. That’s not all; for the more powerful iteration of the Shelby “serpent”, the tuning superpower has added a Whipple unit shoots power output to over 800 hp. Models with the Whipple unit need 3.5 seconds only to reach 60 mph.
The supercharger and Whipple unit are the most recognizable additions responsible for the power hike; however, there are other important components including a new cooling system that features an aluminum tank, radiator as well as a heat exchanger. For models with a manual transmission, Shelby has added a one-piece drive shaft while automatic models feature a transmission cooler.
Handling is also enhanced with a Brembo brake system that features six pistons at the front and four pistons at the rear. The model also features performance tires and the Ford Performance track handling package which can be replaced with a Penske track suspension unit.
Price and release date
The 2018 Ford Shelby Super Snake has a starting price of $113,445 inclusive of the Mustang it is based on. The model will be produced in limited numbers with each unit receiving an exclusive CSM serial number which will be documented in the Shelby’s registry. The new Super Snake also features a 36,000-mile-limited/or 3-year warranty.
If you are a collector of Shelby’s Super Snakes, be on the lookout as the performance house plans to build the 1967 GT500 Super Snake based on the original 1967 Mustang chassis. Shelby had planned to build these models but the plan never materialized. Only ten models will be built each costing $249,995.
