One thing I love about Ford Motors is that once they see an opportunity, they exploit it fully. Since the automaker ventured into supplying the government with vehicles customized for law enforcement, the automaker quickly established a strong dominance leaving others to share a small portion. According to Ford, the Police Interceptor Utility is the most popular and most successful Ford car used by the “men in blue”. However, Ford actually has a long list of other vehicles used by the government. In the list is the Ford Expedition SUV, which is customized to 2018 Ford Expedition Police Special Service Vehicle. The automaker says that the SUV is a good fit for agencies that need to carry 5 passengers along with a huge load of equipment without experiencing any problems when the officers decide to veer off the tarmac. The 2018 Ford Expedition SSV was launched alongside the F-150 SSV truck.
According to Ford, the 2018 Expedition SSV is the most adaptable, smartest and most capable Expedition ever produced. It provides generous space, up-to-date technology and excellent connectivity to the police, government agencies and fleet owners.
2018 Ford Expedition Police Special Service Vehicle Exterior
The body of the 2018 Ford Expedition Police Special Service Vehicle is made of high-strength steel and aluminum alloy. This helps increase the durability of the models as well as protect its elements from various hazards in addition to improving performance. The exterior look of the SSV is similar to that of the civilian Expedition. Only the lightbar and police decals differentiate the two. In fact, if a civilian model stands side-by-side to an Expedition SSV that does not have the decals and the light bar, you cannot tell the difference.
Interior
The 2018 Ford Expedition SSV has a simplistic cabin when compared with the civilian Expedition. It does not feature most of the comfort and luxury features on the civilian model. At the front, Ford has done away with the 40/20/40 bench in favor of 40/blank/40 seats to create additional space for customization purposes.
Fleet work, law enforcement and other government work can turn out to be messy. To ease cleanup, Ford has replaced the rear carpets and seats wrappings with vinyl.
Engine and performance
The 2018 Ford Expedition SSV like the base 2018 Ford F-150 is powered by a 3.5 L, twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 engine. Currently, the engine produces 365 horses and 420 lb-ft of torque. Channeling power duty is given to the new 10-speed automatic system. The new transmission system delivers enhanced performance and acceleration compared to the 6-speed automatic system it has replaced.
The 2018 Ford Expedition SSV is offered in both RWD and AWD. The automaker also offers an automatic Start/Stop feature that helps to conserve gas. Ford has also replaced the previous stock alternator with a high-output 240-amp unit. The new unit will put up better with the current needs for extended idle times as well as meet the ever-rising demand for extra onboard electrical power. The Expedition SSV is also hooked up with a limited-slip differential.
Price and release date
Ford did not announce prices of the models during its release. The 2018 Ford Expedition SSV together with its 2018 F-150 SSV brother will be delivered to fleet owners and government agencies later this year.
