The Focus Active is Ford’s newest vehicle which aims to follow the footsteps of the Fiesta Active. Like the Fiesta Active, the new 2019 Ford Focus Active is a compact crossover that is inspired by the Focus hatchback. The crossover targets those buyers looking for a car that can handle some rough terrain without it being a high-riding SUV. When it arrives, the Ford Focus will compete with only the Subaru Crosstrek; in fact, the success of the Crosstrek which is without a direct competitor has prompted Ford to venture into the niche segment. Ford hopes the new model will motivate an otherwise fading brand. In 2017, Ford sold only 158,385 Ford Focus models while the Crosstrek alone sold 110,138 models. Since the Crosstrek does not have other rivals, Ford hopes the Focus will get a huge chunk of the Crosstrek’s market share. The new Focus Active crossover has a more rugged look compared to its siblings. However, the model will not have exceptional off-road capabilities as it will still be a front-wheel-drive model using the same power-trains as the hatchback.
2019 Ford Focus Active Exterior and interior
Ford Has made several changes to give the regular Focus hatchback a crossover look. To start with, engineers have increased the ride height by 30mm. In terms of looks, the Focus Active features unique bumper moldings that have silver skid-plates, black side cladding and roof bars common with crossovers. The roof bars here are largely a design feature rather than functional items. The model also gets a unique front fascia, unique alloy wheels, black roof and black mirror caps. Its wheelbase has also been enlarged.
According to Ford, the Focus Active’s interior is crafted using hard materials to support the active lifestyles of buyers, unlike standard Focus models. The Focus Active will be well trimmed; the crossover will likely feature the Sync3 infotainment system that supports Apple CarPlay as well as Android Auto, USB ports at the front and rear for all passengers to use and a Wi-Fi hotspot that supports 10 devices.
As for safety, Ford said it will meet the Euro NCAP standard meaning Autonomous Emergency Braking is standard. Adaptive cruise control, active LED headlights, and collision avoidance technology are optional.
Engine and performance
Ford is yet to confirm the actual engines that will power the 2019 Ford Focus Active. However, considering the small crossover is not that much different from other Focus models, it will likely use the same engines. Depending on the market, the Focus Active will be available in various turbocharged petrol and diesel mills. The engines will feature cylinder deactivation to help save fuel. The engines will be paired with a newly developed 8-speed automatic gearbox that Ford says adapts shift patterns to a driver’s driving style. An ergonomic Rotary Shift Dial is used to control the transmission system.
Price and release date
Ford is yet to confirm pricing and release date of the 2019 Ford Focus Active in the U.S. market. However, in Europe, the Focus Active will go on sale in January 2019 according to credible sources. The model will hit the U.S. market later on; probably in the second quarter.
